Radar Traffic Tickets & Speeding Tickets in Florida

A radar ticket is a traffic violation given to a driver who has been caught driving over the speed limit on a police officer’s radar gun. The radar speed gun is a device used similar to a Doppler radar unit to measure the speed of a moving object. It uses a radio transmitter and a receiver to send out a radio signal, allowing it to bounce off the target object. When the signal is sent back to the radar gun, it calculates the difference of the frequency of the reflected radio waves from that of the gun to calculate the object’s speed.

Currently, many law enforcement officers use LIDAR speed guns, which use the principle of time of flight of a laser beam to approximately calculate the speed of the targeted object or vehicle. However, these are said to have serious flaws when the laser is reflected off a wing mirror, which causes it to reflect to a different object before returning to the gun. Additionally, when the laser hits the vehicle and then moves along the side of the vehicle instead of simply hitting a fixed point on the vehicle, an erroneous reading is given as a result.
